Abdominal and Oncology Imaging Fellowship

Our Abdominal Imaging Section serves the University of New Mexico Hospital, UNM Outpatient Surgery and Imaging Service and the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho, NM and the VA Medical Center in Albuquerque.

We offer an Abdominal and Oncologic Imaging Fellowship position for a one year term. Fellowship experience may involve all of the following, in a teaching environment with attending faculty supervision, and can be tailored to some extent to the interests of successful candidates: Outpatient and inpatient abdominal (and pelvic) and oncology radiology, particularly MRI, MDCT, Ultrasound and General GI/GU Radiology.

We offer exposure to a broad range of imaging pathology afforded by our tertiary care referral setting, Level 1 trauma provider, underserved population and affiliation with UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center.  Specific learning opportunities in the program include: Abdominal and Pelvic MRI including multiparametric prostate MRI, MRI for HCC surveillance and oncology imaging/staging; MRI for rectal cancer staging and fistula detection and mapping, MRI for placental evaluation, MR and CT enterography, CT for detection, staging and surveillance of malignancies including clinical trial metrics, Ultrasound HCC screening, US elastography and contrast enhanced ultrasound.  Optional rotation could include FDG PET/CT interpretations.

In addition to hands-on experience, fellow education will be supported by formal lectures, case conferences and journal club. The fellowship also offers opportunities to develop academically including faculty mentoring with opportunities for lectures, research and publications.  The fellow, supervised by faculty, will participate in several interdisciplinary conferences and tumor boards. Procedures will be limited to thyroid US guided biopsies unless the candidate desires a greater range of exposure to abdominal/pelvic interventions in which case some work with our interventional radiology section may be arranged.
