Musculoskeletal Fellowship Program

All of our positions for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 MSK Fellowships are filled.

Application information for the 2018-2019 MSK Fellowship will be posted at a later time.  We accept two fellows per academic year.

The Musculoskeletal Fellowship is a one-year appointment based at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The department supports the UNM Outpatient Surgery and Imaging Service, the Sandoval Regional Medical Center and the Albuquerque Veterans Administration remotely. Fellows receive instruction in a wide spectrum of image interpretation across all modalities, with advanced MR imaging at 1.5 and 3T. In excess of 5,000 Musculoskeletal MRIs are performed by our department annually.   Image-guided interventions are scheduled daily ranging from routine fluoroscopically guided hip injections to ultrasound guided injections of tendons, bursae, and small joints. Fellows have the opportunity for further training in spine imaging and intervention in conjunction with our Neuroradiology and Interventional Radiology sections.

Our department emphasizes imaging in sports medicine and maintains a strong relationship with the Orthopedic Surgery Department. Fellowship training includes a weekly multidisciplinary sports medicine conference with sports medicine faculty and fellows who are the team physicians for the UNM Lobos Athletic Department. In addition, we work closely with the orthopedic oncology service and participate in a weekly multidisciplinary sarcoma tumor board. Fellows are active participants in all conferences.

The Musculoskeletal teaching block takes place during August every year with a core of didactic lectures from UNM Musculoskeletal Radiology faculty and staff.  Additional lectures from guest speakers vary from year to year. An academic drawing account is awarded to fellows for reference materials and/or meeting leave expenses.

Musculoskeletal fellows are paired with faculty every weekday for coverage of the clinical musculoskeletal radiology service. Additionally, they participate in the general radiology call pool as an attending physician. Up to one day per week, fellows may be scheduled on a non-musculoskeletal service depending on participant interest and staffing needs of the department.

Fellows are encouraged to participate in resident education by providing case conferences. There is no research requirement; however, there are ample opportunities for research. Furthermore, fellows have the opportunity to participate at our annual departmental Research Day in May.

Our clinical volume and gamut of pathology prepares musculoskeletal fellows for a bright future in academic medicine or private practice.
